CHINESE SAILORS IN COURT.
(Per Press Association.)
Dunedin, October 20
The eight Chinese who were arrested for refusing to work on the German steamer Walkure were before the Police Court this morning, and pleaded not guilty. Mr. W. C. McGregor, S.M., in answer to a point raised by Mr. Scurr, for the defence, said that, the Court had not jurisdiction. Ho produced, a Gazette of 1869 showing that the North German Confederation had in that year claimed benefits under our Shipping Act of 1860, and that the proclamation had never been revoked. Mr. Scurr retorted that the North German Confederation went out’ of existence after the FrancoPiussian War, and there was no agreement as to Gorman ships, nor evidence that this nation desired benefits of our Act. The Magistrate adjourned the case till to-moi row to decide the point.
