(Received 7,. 9.45 a.m.) Melbourne, October 7. Major-General Hood, Chief of the General Staff of the Commonwealth Forces, and ex-Imporial General, is dead. He suffered from nervous breawdown, and obtained six months’ leave, but death was unexpected. General Hood rose from the ranks.
Mi' Fisher, speaking at the Scotch College, declared that he hoped in a few years New Zealand would no linked with Australia, and bo associated not ‘ only in defence, but in commerce.

There has been a disastrous bush fire at Winton. Over twenty miles of grass was destroyed. Rain extinguished the fires.
