The School Committee met last •..mgfifc'r ’ - i' '. ‘ Mr. McMahon wrote resigning his position on the committee.—The resignation was accepted with regret, apd it was decided to ask the Rev. B. , to take the vacant scat. . fin reply to an invitation from the ■ chairman, Sir Joseph Ward wrote that if it was at all possible he would perfpm the ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the new school. • < The visiting committee (Messrs. Smart and Stewart) reported:—Your committee visited the school on several- occasions and found everything in.- good, order . under the circumstances. A new grate is needed in .the Technical School, as new parts for ‘ the - old one cannot be procured. Wc authorised the breaking up of the • foundations of the chimneys to enable a roadway to be made from the .-back gate,’and the caretaker was authorised to employ labour for the purpose. Wo also procured from Messrs Kemp' and Sawle a bell for the . use, of *- i * the ■ school • - - l -The 'contractor , ting material on the site for the new school. The Headmaster (Mr. F. Tyror) re- ; ported:—l should like you to arrange with the contractor to put in the ddoFin the west wall of the High &|hppl room as soon as he begins his contract. ~ This will enable the chil- . drew to come and go by the west side dfflue school, and so not interfere with;tho contractor’s work, which for a..|imo will be mostly on the" north sidd.- It will bo necessary for your' committee also to open a temporary gate' Bn the west side of the school. The inspector’s annual examination is set .down for October 4th and sth. mission has been granted by the Board to postpone our spring holidays till the second week in October It Wdi essential in the interest of the afeirhge; attendance and consequent Staff of the school, that the last geje’s attendance should be taken in i'September quarter. Owing to measlesj; the school attendance—l am Speaking of the primary department—ittftho beginning of the'- quarter fell gradually from 520 to 360. It hap now, however, reached its normal condition ’ and,. given fine -weather next ■ week, 7 wo. shall not be far below the jnccesSary,soo for, the whole quarter. A . „new standard is set for this year’s examination, in matriculation and solicitors’ general knowledge. Owing to uncertainty as to what the examiners Will require.
