A deputation waited on the Premier tmi afternoon to urge the Government to make a start with the NapierGisborne railway from the Napier end. It- asked that £50,000 be spent this year pn that lino from that end and £50,000! from the Gisborne end. : Sir Joseph Ward said he had already made it clear that the Government intended to go on with the Napier end. ske Government was doing its best to Commence there, and promised to table ah authorisation this session. In the'course of general remarks, Sir Joseph Ward resented criticism of a kind calculated to damage the Government and deter the country from going on with public works. The Government had been subjected to the vilest abuse and most contemptible tactics in connection with the public undertakings it was carrying on. In no other country would they find the cry of stinking fish being so raised. The Government would, • however, make proper provision for railways and accept its responsibility.
