LOCAL AND GENERAL.
At the Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Mr J. Leydon, J.P., a first-offending drunkard was convicted and discharged. In all probability a large boardinghouse will be erected in the very near future on the section at the corner of Say ton Street and Broadway (just above the Fire Brigade Station) which recently changed hands. Seventeen years ago Sir Joseph Ward assumed the office of Postmas-ter-General. The revenue for that year was £820,058. Last year, for the first time, it exceeded a million sterling, marking an epoch in the history of the department. To produce this result, over one hundred millions of letters and over eight millions and a half of telegrams were dealt with, says the “N.Z. Times.”
