ONE POINT.
At football, like everything else, the unexpected often happens. This was again evidenced in the result of tiie match played yesterday between Tatanaki and West Coast. When the Taranaki team succeeded in defeating the Wellington team—which was considered the strongest combination 'n the Dominion—by twenty points, and Otago by twenty-four points, victory for Taranaki was looked upon .h assured in the battle against t ito VestCoasters; but that is just where the mistake was made. The latter put up a better fight throughout than any previous opponents Taranaki had to face, and the success of the Southern men—if only by I one point—gives additional weight to that old saw: “Don't count your chickens before they are hatched.” Yesterday's match will have two effects—the Canterbury men will take heart for Saturday, and the Taranaki men will undoubtedly put all their energy into defeating their opponents in the Cathedral city.
