O ASSOCIATION PLAY-OFF,

There was a very small showing of spectators at Victoria Park yesterday when Manaia and New Plymouth met to try conclusions in the final for the Julian. Cup. .Manaia held the advantage throughout, and finally won by two goals to one. Mr. Simpson, Hawera, held the whistle. New Plymouth won the toss, and played with the sun and a stiff wind behind them. Soon after play started New Plymouth took a corner, but failed to improve their position. A little ‘later a good kick hit the bar, and Manaia’s goal-keeper responded well when called on to- save. Manaia then, set up an attack and got into a good scoring position, but the tables wore quickly turned and New Plymouth again narrowly missed scaring. Manaia then'-gOt ft'ga'in into their opponents’ territory, the ball being neatly smothered from a free iJck awarded them for a foul close to the posts. Manaia continued to press, hut a well-combined attack by them was frustrated and play was rushed down to their - own end. Hero New Plymouth had a corner kick, without advantage, and Manaia got fmJlior lehef from a free kick. Play vent up and down the Held for. a considerable time, the high wind militating agamst accurate play. Just before half tune, Gwillim (New Plymouth) kicked a good goal from near the corner. New Plymouth opened the- second spell with a. danger jus looking dribbling rush, which, however, was nipped in tiro hud. Manaia then pressed, and wore given a corner, and soon afterwards they scored a goal v. ith a solid rush. Manaia continued on the aggressive, and had a number of shots at goal which narrowly missed. A hot shot was sent in by Manaia, which appeared to he well stopped, but it was headed through by one of ! -e New Plymouth men, bringing Manaia’s score up to two. Now Plymouth now livened up, and put in a lot of good work, which, however, was without result. Manaia next had the best of play for a time, doing a lot of unsuccesful shooting at goal, and keeping play well in Now Plymouth’s quarters, after which Now Plymouth again brightened up; but the game ended without further score.

NORTHERN UNION GAME. TARANAKI (16W. NELSON-(8). At Taumata Park, Eltliam, yesterday afternoon, Nelson and Taranaki tried conclusions.' Tho teams lined out as follows: — Taranaki.—-Full-back, IC. Stockman ; throe-quarters-, I). Twohill, C. McLean and M. Julian; five-eighth, O’Sullivan ; half-backs, Moir (captain) and 'Looker; forwards, Fincham, Kyle, Pukero, Morshead, J. Charters, and C. Robinson. Nelson.—Full-back, Beckley ; threeFrauchelle, Pago, and Dixon ; five-eighths, Cederman and •Tames; half-back, Stapp (captain); forwards, B. Teary, K. Teary, Mason (2), Manson, Dixon. In the first spell Julian scored two trios for Taranaki, both being converted, Nelson scoring one try which was not converted. Nelson attacked strongly at the opening of the second spell, but the defence was solid, and Moir got over for the homo team, the extra points not being added. Then Dixon scored for Nelson, tho try being converted, bringing the visitors’ total to 8 as against the homo team’s 13. The final score was made by Julian, but the major points wore not added, tho game thus ending—Taranaki 16, Nelson 8.
