NOTES BY THE W r AY. Sir William Steward proposes to again tempt fortune by introducing this session big Elective Executive Bill and Marriage Act Amendment Bill. The latter seeks to remedy a deficiency in the law which makes legal a marriage with a deceased wife’s sister, but does not permit of marriage with a deceased’s wife’s niece or deceased husband’s nephew. Mr. W. Witty wants legislation to provide for the registration of land agents. Mr. A. W. Hogg seeks by statute to abolish the duties on fc ml; Mr. McLaren has prepared an amendment to the Shearers’ Accommodation Act; and Mr. W. T. Jennings, at the request of a conference of country racing clubs, took the first opportunity of moving to introduce a Bill to amend the Racing Act of last session, the object sought being the setting iside of various decisions of the Racing Commission which in the opinion ,rf the conference unduly penalises country clubs. A suggestion to add to the naval subsidy and at the same time encourage the Dominion’s oil industry is made by the member for Wallace (Mr Thomson), namely, that the Admiralty should he given annually oil valued at ,i thousand pounds. An amendment of the Old-age Pensions Bill is suggested by Mr. J. T. Hogan, to provide for pensions to, inligent persons at the age of sixty, as .veil as pensions for the blind, maimed, crippled, and deformed.

Mr. GT. W. Russell wants a maximum rateable value fixed for lands used for farming purposes. The Government is to be asked by Mr. Buchanan whether it will take the necessary steps to arrange the purchase, under the Land for Settlements Act, of the Hautotara Estate, near Marti nborough.

One of the first private members’ Bills given notice cf was the Prevention of Hereditary Titles Bill, by Mr G-. Newman, member for Manawatu. Mr. Newman will not, however, proceed with his Bill until Sir Joseph, Ward’s return to the Dominion. Mr. Buchanan is to ask the Government whether they will introduce a Bill to amend the present cumbersome nethod of electing representatives for •ombined districts to the Harbour Boards of the Dominion. Mr. Craigie mggests an amendment of the Harbours Act in the. direction of equalising the franchise in town and conhtry. The Hon. J. A". Millar has given notice of the introduction of the Friendly Societies’ Act Amendment Bill, the Shipping and Seamen’s Act Amendment Bill, the Industrial Conciliation md Arbitration Act Amendment Bill, incl the Workers’ Compensation Am-
