He will cairy out a magnetic survey of Australia. Ho is a member of the staff of tho American survey steamer Carnegie. COASTAL STEAMER BURNED. Sydney, July 4. The coastal steamer Eriner, lying in the harbour, was burned to the waters edge through tho overheating of her boilers. Tlie fire had a firm hold before being discovered. A NO-CONFIDENCE MOTION. (Received 5, 9.15 a.m.) Adelaide, July 5. Owing to tho death of Mr. Bruce, (i member' cf the Legislative Council, Mr. Peake’s no-confidence motion was postponed till to-day. MOUNT MORGAN MINE. Brisbane, July 5. Last month the Mount Morgan gold reduction works produced 43200 z. ol gold, and tlie copper works 5C3 j.on s of blister copper, containing 557 tons copper and 72-1 cz. gold. Ihe total value of tlie products was £/6,519. KING EDWARD MEMORIAL. (Received 5, 9.30 a.m.) Sydney, July 0. Tho King Edward 'memorial cxccntive announce that they intend to erect a dignified statue. A BREWERY RING. Sydney, July 5. Tho proprietor cf the Wagga Brewery in giving evidence before tlie Wages Board, said the brewery ring was spreading its tentacles over New South Wales. A large number of country breweries had been compelled to close, and others will have to follow in Victoria. Practically all small establishments had been crushed out. SHORTAGE OF LABOUR. Sydney, July 5. Tlie Trades Hall authorities admit that there is a shortage of labour in various industries at the present time, and claim that this is* the result of labour legislation and the confidence of tho employers in tho Labour Government. WRECK OF THE NEW GUINEA. Sydney, July 5. The rehearing of the steamer Now Guinea wreck case resulted in tne confirmation of the previous finding, under which tho captain’s certificate was suspended. THE BANANA INDUSTRY. Brisbane, July 5. Mr. Tudor promised a deputation of banana growers to consider tho placing of a’ higher import duty on Fiji bananas with a view to developing the Queensland industry. LONG-WCOLLED SHEEP. At the annual meeting cf the Longwool Shecpbreeders’ Association it was stated that the spread of closer settlement had resulted in an increased demand for this class of sheep Speakers strongly urged the necessity of blocking subsidies to shows which gave prizes indiscriminately to British breeds, whether true to typo or not. a matter which the Minister for Agriculture promised to consider. The meeting amended the rules with a view to this end. One speaker declared that there was a probability of European markets being opened to Australian meat. If this were done there would be such a development in British breeds that the developments in New Zealand would seem very small indeed.
