DEATH OF MR JAMES ASHCROFT
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, May 22. Mr. James Ashcroft, formerly Official Assignee at Dunedin and Wellington, died this morning after a week’s, illness, aged /7. He came out from the Old Country in 1862, and engaged in business in Christchurch, Oamaru, and Dunedin, before receiving the appointment of Official Assignee at the last-named place in 1886. He was a member ol the Otago Provincial Council lor two sessions, and editor of I Ik* “Otago Daily Times” for live years. He retired Irom the public service in February, 1998,
