STEWART ISLAND SERVICE

PLAN PROPOSED FOR MORE SPEED (Special) WELLINGTON, October 5. A suggestion that it would be possible to speed up the ferry service between Stewart Island and the mainland by the installation of a new type of propeller in the steamer, was made by Mr G. R. Herron (Nat., Awarua) during consideration of the Marine Department’s Estimates in the House of Representatives today. Mr Herron complimented the Minister of Marine (Mr O’Brien) on Pitting the steamer on last year and giving the people of the island and tourists a better service. The only drawback was that the service was slow, occupying two and a-half to two and three-quar-ter hours. Mr O’Brien said the question of alterations to the propellor was being investigated. If the .boat could be speeded up, perhaps by changing to diesel, that would also be investigated.
