POSTS AT LEGATION IN WELLINGTON

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, October 5. Two prominent American officials arrived at Auckland from San Francisco today to take up posts at the United States Legation in Welling .on. They are Dr Carroll Daugherty, a wellknown economist and industrial writer, who will join the Foreign economic Administration Mission in New Zealand as assistant to the United States Minister and special adviser to the Administration, and Mr O. S. Watson, who will be Commercial Attache to the Legation in place of Mr Basil Dahl, who has been transferred to Washrngl°The wife of Dr Daugherty, who accompanied him together with her two children, is the daughter of Mrs W. H. Roberts, of Epsom. After graduating as Bachelor of Arts at the Otago University, she went to London Univeisity to continue her studies. She has spent the past 18 years in America, and she was awarded a doctorate in philosophy at Chicago University, where Dr Daugherty received his doctorate in Economic Philosophy. AMICABLE RELATIONS

Dr Daugherty said in an interview that he would be glad to co-operate with the Government in the working out of problems of mutual concern, particularly with reference to LendLease and reverse Lend-Lease. At present, however, he could not discuss the question in detail. The relations between the two Governments had always been most amicable. The relations developed in war work were in such a spirit that the ties would remain strong in peace time. Mr Watson, who is ■ accompanied by his wife and' daughter, has had wide experience as a Government representative in many parts of the world. He -has been Trade Commissioner in Canton and Peking, and was at one time Commercial Attache ■ at Helsingfors. He served with the National Recovery Administration for a period, after which he was Commercial Attache at Stockholm. Before receiving his new post, he was Commercial Attache at Caracas, Venezuela.
