Tire engagement is announced of Helen Joyce, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs J. E. Jefcoate, Maple Grove, Invercargill, to Ainslie George, eldest son of Mr and Mrs G. S. Manson, Lakeside, Canterbury.
Mr and Mrs L. S. O’Donnell, of Otahuhu, and formerly of New Plymouth, announce the engagement of their eldest daughter, Audrey May, to George Herbert, youngest son of Mr and Mrs J. Bird, of Invercargill.
Mr and Mrs G. Perrin, Putaruru, North Island, have left on their return north after being the guest of Mrs L. J. Sands, Nith street.
Mrs J. H. Watson and Miss Stables won the prizes at the meeting of the Bridge Circle of the Southland Women’s Club on Monday evening. There were eight tables in play.
Mrs B. Unwin arrives from Timaru on Saturday to spend the winter at Glenaray, Waikaia. She will be accompanied by Mrs K. de Castro, also of Timaru, who will be her guest. Advice has just been received that Miss Marie Winders, a pupil of St. Catherine’s College, Invercargill, gained the highest marks in the South Island for the 1940 licentiate examinations of the Royal College of Music, London, and has been awarded a prize of £lO. Miss Liddell, who has held the offices of secretary and treasurer and latterly of president of the Balfour branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union for several years, retired from office at the recent annual meeting of the branch. Her retiring speech and annual report were particularly fine, and members showed their appreciation of her qualities as an office-bearer as well as of the time and work she had given to the organization. At the same time they expressed regret that she could not accept re-election.
The Music Circle of the Southland Women’s Club held its opening function for the season last evening, when a miscellaneous programme was presented. There was a big attendance, and the chairman, Mrs J. D. Gilmore, expressed a warm welcome to the members, and said she hoped the season would be an interesting and successful one. Songs were sung by Mesdames A. Mewton, P. Frampton, B. W. Hewat, E. K. Mills, Misses W. M. McNaughton and D. Thomson. Piano solos were played by Mrs T. Mathews and piano duets by Mesdames T. Mathews and A. E. H. Bath.
The following appointments were made by the Southland Education Board yesterday;—Mrs Edith Harvey, assistant mistress at Queenstown, in place of Miss Agnes M. Cunningham; Miss Marjorie F. Ockenden, assistant mistress at Tokanui; Miss Winifred B. Archbold, assistant mistress at Woodlands. Mrs Marion L. Henderson was appointed war-time sole teacher at Granity. The following resignations were accepted: Miss Dorothy M. McAlpine, war-time head teacher at Clifden; Miss Jane Harrington, assistant mistress at Waimatuku; Miss Louisa J. Fraser, assistant at Thornbury; Miss Lilian B. McConachie, assistant at Waihopai; Miss Katherine McNamara, special assistant at North Invercargill.
