SOUTHLAND TEAM DEFEATED

CANTERBURY WOMEN’S GOOD DISPLAY

After opening its second innings rather poorly, Canterbury staged a good recovery in the representative women’s cricket match at Doon street on Saturday and secured an outright win against Southland by 81 runs. Canterbury was undoubtedly the superior side, its bowlers, in particular, proving too strong for the Southland batsmen. Southland, in its second innings, improved its showing vastly and was in a good position when Canterbury opened its second innings inconspicuously, but the visiting team rallied at the finish and a successful ninth wicket partnership saved the day. There was a large attendance and the weather was fine.

After being dismissed for 77 runs in its first innings the home team followed on in good style. Towards the end of the innings, however, the forceful bowling of the Canterbury women began to tell and Southland had to adopt quieter tactics. Shortly after play resumed, the Southland team was all out for 192. M. Thomas batted well to compile 42 runs and B. Ingram, the Southland captain, also batted in good style, putting 34 runs on the board before she was caught out. A very exciting stage was reached when Canterbury collapsed in the second innings with two wickets to fall and nine runs to get. A ninth wicket partnership by F. Campbell and P. Farquhar saved the day, although both had many lives. F. Campbell gave a great display of batting to knock up 50 runs before retiring and P. Farquhar did well to compile 39 not out. Canterbury made 180 in its second innings. The shield was presented after the match and reference was made by speakers to the excellent sporting spirit which had marked the play.
