INVERCARGILL HAS GOOD WIN

In a game in which the standard of cricket was quite good Invercargill secured a comfortable victory over the Old Boys team, winning by 176 runs to 121. The wicket was in good order. Mainwaring and Mac Gibbon opened for Invercargill and their partnership produced 27 runs. Mainwaring’s 32 was the result of forceful play and included three 4’s. The batting of the Invercargill team generally was good and they struck out well. H. Fraser made a forceful 43. He placed his shots all round the wicket and opened his shoulders to anything that looked at all likely. His seven 4’s were the result of hard and careful batting. Scores:

CANTERBURY’S GOOD POSITION OTAGO’S POOR BATTING (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, February 8. Canterbury 507 for six wickets (declared) and Otago 187 and 118 for six wickets. That was the position at the end of the second day’s play in the Canterbury-Otago cricket match at Carisbrook. It is a state of affairs which speaks for itself. Canterbury declared its innings closed at the first day score and was able to clinch its abundant advantage as a result of the sorry display of batting by the Otago players. Their efforts on an easy wicket with conditions all in their favour and against an attack that was no more than steady were dismally ineffectual. A. R. Knight played two valuable innings of 56 and 52 not out, although he was batting a long time before he played many of the strokes of which he is capable. T. Chettleburgh showed clearly that there were plenty of runs available to anyone who cared to use his feet and hit the ball with some purpose, but there was little else in the batting other than an awestruck defence.
