NORTH SCHOOL’S PICNIC

ENJOYABLE OUTING AT BLUFF

About 250 persons attended the annual picnic of the North School at Bluff on Saturday. The weather was fine, but overcast. The picknickers sjent a happy time at Argyle Park and the adjacent beach. The committee, comprising Messrs J. Pickard (chairman), J. Hamilton, F. Sutherland, T. Butson, R. T. Parsons, W. Latham, J. Aitken and H. Lilley spared no effort to ensure that everyone spent an enjoyable day and conducted a miniature sports meeting at the park, where a circular running track had been made. A feature of the running events was the splendid performance of Miss Shirley Hardman, who won several races from back marks. The manner in which she threaded her way through the large fields to reach the front in each case gave the spectators quite a thrill. This young runner is the present junior champion of the Southland primary schools.

Other prize-winners were.—Childdren: D. Fenn, A. Huffadine, Reijel Skjellerup, Colleen Soper, Ivan Rolfe, June Scott, Ivan Ritchie, Kevin Ritchie, A. Butson, Norman McFarlane, B. Walker, Dorothy Butson, Merle Shaw, Betty Gregory, B. Butson and D. McLellan. Married Women’s Race: Mesdames E. Shirley, Harrington and R. Gilmour. Single Women’s Race: Nolene Davenport. Married Men’s Race: H. Lilley, J. Hamilton, W. Latham. No picnic was held last year by the school because of continued bad weather. The committee expressed appreciation for the arrangements made for them by the Bluff Progressive League.
