SOUTHLAND WINS IN DUNEDIN
HARRAWAY SHIELD RETAINED (Special to The Times) ; DUNEDIN, February 9. The annual bowling match for the ' Harraway Shield was played between I Otago and Southland at the Caledonian | green on Saturday, when Southland j easily retained the trophy by a margin i of 64 points. The weather was over- i cast, but fine, and the green was in ' excellent condition. Even though they were playing on ! their home green the Otago players seemed unable to cope with the visitors’ : accurate drawing and only two of the l Dunedin fours won their games. An I i indication of the visitors’ superiority is ; | given by the fact that three well- I I known Otago skips, C. Tyrrell, J. Dow- : I land and W. JAMES MACPHERSON CLUB I The annual rinks tournament, conducted by the James Macpherson Bowling Club, was held at Waianiwa on Saturday under ideal playing conditions. A full green of 16 rinks took ! part. 1 In section A Batcheler (Te Rangi),! McFarlane (Georgetown) and Gard-1 ner (Invercargill) qualified with three wins and one loss. In section B Spencer (Georgetown), Graham (Hokonui)J Burns (Wyndham). Steel (Bluff) each secured three wins. In the semi-final play Gardner beat McFarlane 7-4, but lost to Batcheler 7-4. In section B Burns beat Steel 8-5 and Graham beat Spencer 5-3. The section winner was Graham, who beat Burns, 8-4 . The final of 21 heads between Batcheler and Graham was a keenly-con-tested game, the Te Rangi rink retaining the lead throughout to win 16-12.
