YACHT MISSING AT TAURANGA
Prisoner’s Escape Connected (United Press Association) TAURANGA, February 8. The mystery of the whereabouts of the auxiliary yacht Jeanette, which disappeared from her moorings at Mount Maunganui in the early hours of Tuesday last, has been marked by rather startling developments. It now appears that the location of the yacht would lead to the discovery of Richard Humphreys, aged 22, who escaped from custody by jumping from a train between Frankton and Te Awamutu on Thursday evening of last week. There is strong evidence for believing that the prisoner’s dash for liberty and the disappearance of the yacht are connected. Four people at Mount Maunganui, including Mr J. C. Dumbleton, owner of the yacht, definitely identified the photograph of Humphreys as that of the man who was at Mount Maunganui on Sunday and who, after obtaining a large quantity of stores, disappeared.
