MAGISTRATE’S COURT
FRIDAY
(Before Mr R. C. Abernethy, S.M.) Walter Lewis Newbury, aged 45 years, railway engine driver, and Douglas Gordon Domigan, aged 38, railway guard, pleaded guilty to charges of theft of coal at Tuatapere valued at 2/and 2/6 respectively, the property of the Railway Department. Detective-Sergeant R. Thompson said Constable Skipworth found both accused in the possession of coal on the night of January 31. They admitted stealing it. Newbury had had 20 years’ service with the department and Domigan 18 years’ service. Mr J. C. Prain asked for leniency for the accused and said they had suffered severe punishment in the loss of their positions. He asked that their names be suppressed. The Magistrate refused to suppress; the names, but said he would take into consideration their loss of employment. | Each accused would be convicted and fined £5.
