BOWLS
SOUTHLAND BOWLING TEAMS AT DUNEDIN By JACK HIGH Bowlers all over the province will have a busy day today. Two Southland teams will go to Dunedin to play interprovincial fixtures; there is the annual rinks tournament of the James McPherson club at Waianiwa; the Western District championships are being held at Tuatapere, and there are the usual inter-club matches for those remaining in Invercargill. A strong team has been selected to play for Southland against Otago in the Harraway Shield match, and although the run of successes has gone against Southland in recent years, it would not be a surprise if the 1941 Southland team brought back the trophy from Dunedin. The third match between Returned Soldier bowlers of Otago and Southland will also be played at Dunedin tomorrow. This match is now well established and looks like being the event of the year for many soldier bowlers. The hospitality which goes with this game is worth qualifying for alone. The “diggers” certainly know how to run a bowling reunion. Good progress was made with the Shield Rink competition last Saturday and at the end of an interesting day’s play six teams, two city and four country, were left in. The finals will be played on March 8, on which date if is hoped to play the finals of the pairs and singles championships. Bowlers are reminded that one of the most popular of the rink tournaments in the province, the Hokonui Club's tournament, will be held as usual on < March 8. Two greens, Hokonui and j Gore, will be in use, and as soon as the entries are sufficient to fill the two greens the club will close entries.
