Old Coins
A recent paragraph in The Southland Times about several old coins in the possession of the town clerk of Sumner prompted Mr H. G. Mason, of Invercargill, to send into the office two coins minted in the eighteenth century. One is a half-penny minted in 1740 and the other a farthing minted in 1733. The half-penny is well preserved and the letters, Georgivs 11, can be quite easily read.
“Unwarranted Slur” Strong exception was taken by members of the Southland County Council yesterday to statements made by a defendant in the Magistrate’s Court at Mataura who stated that he had sent a cheque to the council on December 9 and had not received his heavy traffic licences by December 28. The county clerk, Mr H. C. Gimblett, said the defendant’s letter to the council was dated December 19 and was received at the office on December 24, on which date the licences were posted. Councillors said the operator had cast an unwarranted slur on the council.
Queenstown Excursion The Railways Department will hold another of its popular excursions to Queenstown tomorrow. Many have already booked their seats and it is expected that the excursion will be well patronized: The train will leave Invercargill at 7.40 a.m. and the passengers will board the Earnslaw, which is due at Queenstown at 12.55 p.m. The return journey will begin at 5.15 p.m. and the train will arrive in Invercargill at 10.14 p.m.'
