£2500 IN FIVE DAYS

SOUTHLAND PLANE FUND SPLENDID RESPONSE OF PUBLIC After being open for five days the Southland Fighter Aeroplane Fund is just a few pounds short of £2500. Donations received at The Southland Times Office yesterday reached the largest total yet—£3l3 —and a further £ll5 was. lodged with the provincial patriotic treasurer and with the committee. The object of the fund is to present to the British Government a sum of money sufficient to buy two or more fighter aeroplanes which will bear the name of Southland and will be flown in action by Southland pilots. This object has the approval of the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) and of the New Zealand Government, which has undertaken to make the necessary arrangements with the British Government once the money has been raised. “THIS APPEALS TO ME” The response of the public to the appeal is exemplified in the following letter from a contributor who sent £25: “This way of helping England appeals to me. I wish I could give more just now; I will later on. What I can do is so little compared with what our own boys are doing and what Britain’s brave men have done in Flanders. We must all do our best to help.” Offers of help from the country districts continue to be received by the Fighter Aeroplane Committee. The Riverton branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association has decided to forgo the field day which it intended to hold cn August 17 to raise funds for soldiers’ club rooms and to direct its efforts towards increasing the Fighter Aeroplane Fund. In addition to the gift from Sir Robert Anderson of 64 sections at Riverton, the committee has received two sections at Bluff from Mr Ernest Bradshaw, of Invercargill. The method of disposing of these sections will be decided shortly. Contributions may be sent to the provincial patriotic treasurer, the town clerk (Invercargill) or to the editor of The Southland Times.. To avoid confusion all subscriptions should be plainly marked “Southland Fighter Aeroplane Fund.” SOUTHLAND TIMES LIST The following subscriptions were received at The Southland Times office yesterday:—
