Soldiers’ Pensions
The efforts of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association to secure the elimination of anomalies in pensions for members of the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force were explained at the annual meeting of the Invercargill association on Saturday night by Mr J S. Filippini. He said the association had after many years secured the withdrawal of anomalies in pensions, but for the present force some had crept in again. Among other things the legislation provided that an economic pension would be granted for wives and dependants only if the marriage occurred within two years of the disablement and if a binding contract of marriage existed at the time of the disablement. This was considered to be’unfair and the association was endeavouring to secure its removal. Active membership of the association would be open to all members of the present force taking part in any campaign in the forces overseas and having an honourable discharge. The members of the present force were fortunate in having an established and experienced organization to watch their interests.
