WIDE POWERS IN AUSTRALIA GOVERNMENT SEEKS AUTHORITY NO CONSCRIPTION FOR OVERSEAS SERVICE (Received June 17, 2 a.m.) MELBOURNE, June 16. The Prime Minister (Mr R. G. Menzies) announced that an emergency meeting of the Federal Parliament will be held on Thursday to deal with a Bill to give the Government wide emergency powers to use every available resource of man power and industry, if necessary, in home defence. Except that there will be no conscription for overseas service, the measure will give powers similar to those m Britain. Parliament’s meeting will last only two days. Two vanloads of communist documents and literature were seized by the police, who raided the offices of the Communist Party and the League for Peace and Democracy and the homes of 60 known communists on, Saturday. No arrests were made. Action was taken after the Cabinet had decided on Saturday on a total ban on the operations of these organizations.
