FAILURE TO PAY LEVY

ACTION TAKEN AGAINST WATERSIDE WORKERS

(United Press Association)

WELLINGTON, May 1. Action has been taken by the Wellington Branch of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union against members who failed to pay the levy of £1 to the Labour Daily fund. The secretary, Mr Johnson, said that in accordance with the rules the names of some men had been removed from the union register and they would have to make application for readmission if they made payment. It is understood that more than 100 members have failed to pay the levy, but that only a few are so far directly affected in employment as unionists. It is also understood that at the last stopwork meeting a resolution was passed that they would not be recognized as union members. The effect of the action now taken is that the men concerned have been displaced in jobs, but there is no shortage of waterfront labour.
