The Californian Rugby Union has invited a combined Australian and New Zealand team to visit California early in 1941, with a return visit in June of the same year. The proposal was submitted to the New South Wales Rugby Union by Mr W. Heslehurst, a former Sydney referee, whose position takes him periodically to America. The New South Wales Union decided to ask for further details, but informed Mr Heslehurst that an Australian team would not contemplate making the trip while the war was on. COUNTRY PIRATES CLUB SUCCESSFUL SEASON IN 1939 At the annual meeting of the Country Pirates Football Club in the Athol hall the president, Mr G. H. Soper, presided over a good attendance of members. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr G. H. Sopei’ (re-elected); secretary, Mr G. A. Soper, jun.; delegates to Northern District Sub-Union, Messrs G. H. Soper and A. J. Earl; selectors, captain, deputy-captain and Mr L. G. Soper; grounds committee, Messrs G. Rutter and S. C. Soper. It was decided to enter one senior team in the Northern competition. The report for the year stated that the year 1939 was begun with a credit balance of £5/7/1. The season was a successful one for the club and also for the Northern District. The following players gained Northern District representative honours:—H. Soper, A. Sutherland, T. McNamee, C. Soper, L. Greer, F. Greer, G. Rutter, L. McLean, N. Ivey, Clarence Soper. The last-named player gained Southland representative honours. The senior team won the Bedford-Compton Shield for the ninth season in succession. It also won the seven-a-side tournament at Lurtisden.

The junior team, however, was not so successful, mainly because of a shortage of players. Since last year the club had lost a number of its players. The following were at present on active service in Egypt:—Privates Cyril Soper, A. Sutherland, S. Soper (secretary), J. Sutherland, N. Ivey, J. Harvey, M. Clode. Quartermaster Sergeant D. Garthwaite was away with the 2nd Echelon.
