SHOOTING LICENCES

To The Editor

Sir, —The shooting season is opening next Saturday and I should like to ask if the Acclimatization Society is giving away any complimentary shooting licences, seeing that there is only a fortnight’s season this year. I understand it gave complimentary fishing licences to some fishermen for helping to let Lake Waituna out to the sea at Tail’s end, which most people consider very unnecessary, as two or three men let it out at the usual place in a few hours. Besides, the society had to pay for the use of a team of horses and a scoop. Its financial position is not very good at present, and it should be more careful with licence holders’ money.— Yours, etc., SHOOTER. April 29, 1940. ■ [This letter was referred yesterday to the secretary of the Southland Acclimatization Society, Mr D. Cuthbertson, who said that while the society paid for the use of a team of horses and a scoop, it issued no complimentary fishing licences last year in return for assistance given in opening Lake Waituna.]
