RIFLE SHOOTING

Invercargill Defence Club CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY G. WILSON The final of the Invercargill Defence Rifle Club’s championship, which was won this year by G. Wilson, was fired on Saturday afternoon in very boisterous weather; The ranges were 300 and 600 yards, 10 shots at each. Only eight members had completed the P^ evl ° u ? three stages and .one of those defaulted on Saturday, leaving seven to fight out the finish. At 300 yards G. Wilson, who was one of the leaders with 289, shot well for 47 and maintained his lead, although he was counted out by W. Milley, who was 286, for this range total. Their ■ cards read-Milley, 4555454555—47; Wilson, 5454555455-47. J. Archer, who had tied with V ilson at 289, made 45, thus dropping two points. Mrs L. R. Lyall with 285 made 44 and also went back from the lead- ; ers. J. Keelty with 280 made 46, which included an outer. These scores were good considering the wind. At 600 yards the conditions became worse as driving rain swept the range. The visibility was very poor. Wilson and Archer, whose respective aggregates were now 336 and 334, shot first. Wilson kept well on the target for 5545444452—42, but Archer found trouble and his score of 2325435442 34 settled his chance. Milley and Mis Lyall were next and the former made a great effort, but was unlucky as his card will show. He made 5225555554 43. This was the best at this range and made his total 376 and gave him second place. Mrs Lyall found the conditions too much for her and scored only 22. Wilson’s win was a popular one as he has shot well right thiough the series. Milley also shot well after getting only a moderate score in the first stage. Saturday’s scores were:—
