EXECUTIVE MEETING IN
INVERCARGILL ) The executive committee of the Southern Southland Federation of Women’s Institutes met in the Tudor Lounge, Invercargill. The president, Mrs S. Bowman, presided over the following members: Mesdames E. Kennedy, secretary, D. Mulvey, H. J. Davie, S. J. Henderson, J. Young, C. Leith, J. Nicol and J. W. Martin. Final arrangements were made for the half-yearly council meeting to be held in Invercargill on November 1. Miss Amy Kane, Dominion president will be present to address the meeting and the executive hopes that all institute members will make an effort, to be present to welcome the Dominion president. Arrangements are in hand for the holding of a school for officers while Miss Kane is here. Several remits were accepted for the council meeting. Mrs J. W. Martin, provisional voluntary organizer for the Federation, will represent the Federation as delegate to the voluntary organizers’ school to be held in Wellington in November. A tea shower given by Mrs Nicol was received. Mrs Ramsay, past president of the Federation, was the guest of the executive for afternoon tea. Mrs Bowman referred to the work done by Mrs Ramsay during her term of office and in presenting her with a small gift wished her every happiness and trusted that she would keep in touch with the movement.
OHAI BRANCH The eight birthday of the Ohai Women’s Institute was held in the public hall. Mrs Bowman (president) welcomed the visitors.
An interesting programme had been arranged and was effectively carried out. Tap solos by Elaine Mair and Joy Mills were well received. Duets, trios, recitations, choruses, play-reading and a “back to childhood” item were among the numbers given by Women’s Institute members. Mrs Bowman addressed the gathering and called on the two members to light and to extinguish the eight candles on the birthday cake, which had been baked and decorated with the Women’s Institute badge in colour by the secretary, Mrs Macßae. Mrs Bowman presented the cake. Mrs Martin, vice-president of the executive, was asked to cut the cake. In doing so she wished the Women’s Institute another prosperous year. Representatives from the Riverton Women’s Institute, the Nightcaps Women's Institute and the Otautau and Nightcaps branches of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union each cut a slice from the cake and expressed their very best wishes.
OREPUKI BRANCH The Orepuki Women’s Institute celebrated its eighth birthday in the institute rooms, the party taking the form of a social evening. Members invited friends and the members of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union were also present and an enjoyable evening was spent , Games and competitions formed part of the entertainment and items were given by Mrs T. Simpson. A general knowledge test run by Mrs Fraser was won by Mrs E. Clifford. Mrs McKay’s competition was won by Mrs J. Goold and Mrs Finn’s by Mrs Fraser. The birthday cake was made and presented by Mrs W. Mempes and decorated by Miss Hurst with eight candles and crystallized flowers. Mrs T. Simpson lit the candles and Mrs J. Goold extinguished them. The points prizes for the year resulted: Points competition, Mrs Weir 1, Miss Hurst 2. Bloom competition, Miss N. Goold 1, Mrs Morris 2.
