CELEBRATION PLANS IN PROVINCES APPLICATIONS RECEIVED FOR SUBSIDIES (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 9. Dates for the centennial celebrations already submitted were approved by today’s meeting of the National Centennial Council and will be forwarded to the various provincial committees for their guidance in avoiding clashes. More than 100 applications for subsidies on centennial memorial projects were considered and approved. The council decided to recommend the Government to grant all possible facilities for the importation of whatever would be required for the centennial. , , It was decided that March 31, 1940, be fixed as the final date on which original applications might be lodged for centennial subsidies, and that all subsidy moneys must be lifted by March 31, 1941. , T x . The Under-Secretary for Internal Affairs (Mr J. W. Heenan) said the centennial organizations had allowed what he would call, without offence, sectional interests to get well ahead in the collection of funds. He gave as an example the response to the cathedral fund of the Bishop of Wellington (the Rt. Rev. H. St. Barbe Holland), and the centenary appeal of the Presbyterian Church. . . A motion was passed stating that, m general, the council favoured only one local centennial memorial in any locality, except where the additional memorial was a tree-planting project and/or an historical publication, but, In special cases, was prepared to consider more than one.
