RUGBY COUNCIL URGES SUPPORT
PRIME MINISTER’S APPEAL FOR VOLUNTEERS (United Press Association) . WELLINGTON, June 9. Following the decision reached at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union about defence, the New Zealand Rugby Council today decided to give it further support bv asking all unions to do all in their cower to encourage footballers to respond to the Prime Minister’s appeal for volunteers. Several delegates explained that their unions had already taken action, the response being highly satisfactory. Lieutenant-Colonel King said the strength of the units in the mam centres was well up to expectations. It was in the country districts that more could yet be accomplished. The resolution would help toward this end. MILITARY RESERVE ' ENROLMENTS WELLINGTON, June 9. Enlistments in the National Military Reserve today reached a total of 6606, an increase of 262 since yesterday. ENCOURAGING RESULTS IN AUCKLAND AUCKLAND, June 9. Nearly 750 of the 1000 men who enlisted for the territorial army as a result of the appeal made by the Mayor of Auckland (Sir Ernest Davis)'have reported to Army headquarters at Auckland. Notices sent to about 300 men have had encouraging results and replies are coming to hand daily in large numbers. FEW ENROLMENTS MADE IN RIVERTON It is reported that enrolments in response to the Prime Minister s appeal for volunteers for the National Military Reserve are coming in very slowly at Riverton and now total nearly 30.
