SWEEPING OF CITY FOOTPATHS
“MONEY ONLY OBSTACLE” Advice that because of the calls made upon the Invercargill City Council there were no funds available for the work of cleansing of footpaths by the corporation staff was received at a meeting of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce yesterday. Mr A. Wachner said he pressed for the work, but the proposal had been turned down. A trial was given afterwards and all the shop keepers were very much in favour of the scheme. He did not know what would actually happen in the future, but he thought that the chamber should pursue its object. He trusted that the Mayor (Mr J. R. Hanan) would give it a sympathetic hearing. If the chamber kept in touch with what was required it would help the town considerably. Mr J. S. Brass: The firms outside the retailers take no interest in the sweeping of footpaths. It is not refuse from the shops that is swept up, but articles Mr P. L. Hodge said that sweeping dropped by the public, was carried out in other towns. The council seemed to be of the opinion that the retailers were trying to get out of work that they should do, said Mr Brass. Why should they do the swepping? It was. not their duty. Mr Wachner: Money is the only obstacle. The council is doing a lot of other good work. “I would like to see the shop keepers take a step,” said Mr C. B. Tapley, He thought they should have tile cooperation of all the shop keepers because they were bearing the brunt of the work. It was decided to write to the council and inquire about the cost of the trial.
