Age Limit Of Junior Grades EASTERN SUB-UNION TAKES NO ACTION The Gore High School Club is definitely opposed to a suggestion to raise the third and fourth grade age limit, according to a letter from the secretary of the club (Mr T. Fyfe) to Wednesday’s meeting of the management committee of the Eastern Southland Rugby Football Sub-Union. “Very few High School boys are above the present third grade age limit,” stated the letter, “and at the moment, only one player would be affected. On the other hand, our club could not possibly enter more than one third grade team and one fourth grade team. If we attempted to make two fourth grade teams they would be very little different from our present fourth grade and would be matched against at least one team which is virtually a third grade team. “We quite realize that the action of some clubs in excluding younger members from the second grade may cause the permanent loss of some players to the game, but from the point of view of our own club the raising of the age limit would prove a very great disadvantage.” A letter from the Mataura Club stated that because of the age limits two fourth grade and three third grade players were unable to play at Mataura this season. No reports had been received from the Pioneer, Albion and Wyndham clubs, stated the secretary. Mr G. D. Robson said that the Mataura club had raised the question because it had been led to believe that there was a fair number of players affected in Gore. The clubs had had a fortnight to consider the matter and it was apparent that no players were standing on the bank at Gore. He moved that no action be taken. The motion was carried.

MATAURA CLUB’S REQUEST The secretary of the Mataura Club (Mr G. D. Robson) wrote requesting that the sub-union give serious consideration to the question of improving the washing facilities at Gore and Mataura. It was felt that a 'system of hot and cold showers should be installed at both grounds, the letter stated. There was considerable discussion and it was decided to write to the various clubs, asking what support they would be prepared to givd in raising money for the installation of showers. Messrs J. W. Aitken, G. D. Robson and H. G. Wallis and the secretary (Mr S. B. Taylor) were appointed to make inquiries about the cost. Mr A. H. Davidson was appointed manager of the Eastern team for Country Day. , The following transfers were granted: E. J. O’Connell, Marist Club (Invercargill) to Mataura; J. Monaghan, Pioneer to Mataura; F. Shaw, Mataura to Pioneer. B. Ferry (Albion) was granted a regrade from first to second grade. J. Pow was granted permission to play for Seaward Downs until the end of the season. Grant was the best of the Nightcaps backs and Fordyce was prominent in the forwards.

The Orepuki third grade team travelled to Otautau, where it was defeated by 26 points to 12.
