APPEAL MADE TO OLD PLAYERS SHORTAGE OF REFEREES AND LINESMEN An appeal to all players of Association football to offer their services as referees and .linesmen upon their retirement from playing, was made at the annual meeting of the Southland Football Referees’ Association. It was stated that the number of referees available for Saturday matches was inadequate. , . ... The secretary (Mr T. McMurdo) will receive applications from old players or from referees wishing to sit the examination for the New Zealand badge. Mr McMurdo said that the duties of the referees would be lightened considerably if the clubs would ensure that grounds were properly marked and nets in position at the scheduled time of starting of the game. The following referees were appointed for tomorrow’s games:— Central v. Mataura (Mr T. McMurdo), Thistle v. Old Boys, 2.45 p.m. (Mr G. Gunn). Thistle v. Old Boys (Mr S. J. McDonald). Arrangements for each club to be allowed a ground and to see that it was properly marked out each Saturday were made. Mr D. Stewart was chairman. Default points were awarded to the Mataura junior team and the Old Boys junior team. Messrs Stewart and McMurdo were appointed a postponement committee, and arrangements were made to see whether or not it would be possible, to announce postponements from Station 4YZ. The association thanked the Agricultural and Pastoral Association for the use of the show grounds for the season’s football.
