BLUFF ROAD IN BAD STATE
“ALMOST IMPASSABLE FOR MOTOR TRAFFIC’’
CRITICISM BY MEMBERS OF HARBOUR BOARD Bluff members and officials of the Harbour Board had to make special arrangements to reach Invercargill for a meeting last night because of the bad state of the Bluff road. The party left Bluff by motor-car and when the worst patch of the road was reached the car was abandoned. The members walked over the bad piece of road ana were met at the other end by a taxi which had been arranged for. The road was described by the party as almost impassable for motor traffic. The chairman (Mr W.\A. Ott) at the meeting suggested a remit to the annual conference of Southland members of Parliament convened by the Southland Progress League that attention be drawn to the state of the road. It was not fair that the road should be left in such a bad state, he said. Mr G. Wraytt: But it is only temporary. It will be tar-sealed before long. Sir Robert Anderson: How long? The chairman said he had travelled all over the South Island where extensive reconstruction was in progress, but nowhere had be encountered a road in a state similar to the Bluff road. The road had been in a bad state for a long time and apparently it would continue for several months as an advertisement had been published prohibiting the use of heavy traffic on the road from June 1 until the end of October It was decided to send a remit on the subject to the conference.
