RAILWAY PORTER KILLED
STRUCK BY SHUNTING ENGINE (United Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, April 17. Struck by a shunting engine at the Tawhiti road level crossing near the Hawera railway station this afternoon, Robert Hugh Trask, aged 20, a porter, single, was thrown against a cattle stop pit, dragged across the road by the engine and killed. He was a son of Mr T. E. Trask, of Eltham. When the accident occurred about 1.30 p.m., Trask had been on duty at the crossing for the arrival of a goods train from the south. It was passing him towards the station as he was struck by the locomotive travelling in the opposite direction on adjoining rails. It is believed that Trask was preparing to swing himself into the guard’s van of the goods train as it passed the cattle stop. CAPSIZE OF LORRY (United Press Association) TAUMARUNUI, April 17. Returning to Taumarunui at 9 o’clock last night a lorry driven by Robei-t John Henry Trenboth, a mechanic, capsized near the National Park station. Leslie Dabb, aged 38, a draper’s assistant, of Taumarunui, married, with two children, was killed. The following were sent to hospital: Trenboth, abrasions; Philip Dalton, ticket writer, severe shoulder injuries; Dorothy Smith, hair dresser, whose parents live at Wellington, shock.
BODY OF CLERK FOUND (United Press Association) GISBORNE, April 17. The body of William Stanley Coleman, a clerk, who has been missing since Sunday afternoon, when he went for a walk, was washed up on the beach today. Clothing believed to belong to Cole Than was found on a groyne in the morning. An inquest is to be held.
