NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN
MONTHLY MEETING HELD
The monthly meeting of the National Council of Women was held on Wednesday afternoon when Mrs Stanley Brown presided over a good attendance.
The president spoke of the death of Mrs C. Fraer, one of the original members of the council, who had established the branch in Invercargill 10 years ago. It was decided that a letter of . ppreciation .of Mrs Traer’s work should be sent to the family. A few minutes silence was observed and a motion of sympathy carried. The chief business of the afternoon was discussion of the Child Welfare Act and the interpretation of the various clauses. The discussion was general and it was resolved that the Act should be divided into sections for study, two members to undertake the study of each section in rotation. While two studied the clauses of administration, two others would acquire information of the inspection and control of receiving homes and institutions for delinquent children, while yet another two would pursue the question of the boarding out of children. As there is some likelihood of a commission of inquiry into the Child Welfare Act being sought, this study would be of great advantage in acquiring knowledge of the Act. As it was found that the school holidays would interfere with the date of the next monthly meeting, which is also the annual meeting, it was decided to postpone it until May 24.
