TESTING STATION FOR VEHICLES

PROPOSAL REJECTED BY COUNCIL In view of the apparent impossibility of making a motor-vehicle testing station self-supporting and in view of the increasing cost of traffic control in the city, the Invercargill City Council cannot see its way to proceed with the proposal at the present time.. This decision was made at the meeting of the council last evening. A report from the Finance Committee stated: In reply to an inquiry from the Minister of Transport (the Hon. R. Semple) whether he would favourably consider granting the council the sole rights for certain country centres should it provide a testing station capable of dealing with the number of cars involved, the Minister advised that hardship would be caused motorists in travelling the distances involved in order to have the necessary inspection of their vehicles made. The letter stated that' motorists should be granted facilities which would enable them to obtain warrants of fitness at a minimum of expense and inconvenience. It was decided to advise the Minister of the council’s decision.
