AUTHORITY HEARS APPLICATIONS PASSENGER AND GOODS LICENCES At a sitting of the No. 4 District Licensing Authority at Gore yesterday, Mr V. Raines, of Dunedin, presided. Mr A. E. Hargreaves appeared on behalf of the Railway Department, Mr S. B. Taylor, on behalf of the Gore Carriers’ Association, Mr G. E. T.i Dorman on behalf of the Lorry Owners’ Association, and Mr H. Miller on behalf of the Post and Telegraph Department. Messrs A. Smyth and N. Watson appeared on behalf of individual applicants. The renewal of B. N. Smith’s GoreWaikaka passenger service licence was granted, no objection being raised. D. W. Low applied for a renewal of his Gore-Waipounamu passenger service licence and an amendment to the licence.

The applicant was represented by Mr Smyth, who said that his client had found his business was not paying at the rates charged for passengers and goods. An increase in rates was desired.

The' applicant said that he had been on mail contract work for seven years. In recent years there Had been a decrease in the number of passengers and the quantity of goods because of more people possessing cars. He covered 100 miles daily. He considered that a minimum of £365 a year was necessary to make it a paying proposition. At present he was not getting as much as a union wage. In reply to Mr Raines, the applicant said that he worked from eight to nine hours a day for six days a week. For goods the carriage charge was 6d for 141 b, 1/- for 281 b and 1/6 up to 1001 b. For the cartage of bread 3d a loaf was paid, and 10/- a year was paid for each newspaper carried.

Mr Miller said that a balance-sheet submitted by Low to the Railway Department some time ago showed that he had made a profit of £258 a year. This had been worked on a 17 months’ basis.

In granting the renewal of the licence, Mr Raines reserved his decision about an increased subsidy. He said he had other applications for increased subsidies. Concerning the cartage of goods he intended to draw up a schedule of charges for all passenger-goods services as charges varied in many instances. ’

W. H. J. Herman, of Waikaia, was granted a transfer of a passenger licence from the estate of C. E. Heenan to herself. The transfer of a passenger licence from B. N. Smith to C. A. Clent of Gore, was also granted. E. W. Rivers, of Gore, was granted a renewal of passenger licences for the Gore suburban area and the WaikakaGore service. 1

R. W. D. Gerken was granted a renewal of a passenger service licence for the Gore-Wendon service.

Renewals of passenger service licences were granted without objection as follows: —Minister of Railways, EdievaleTapanui service; C. E. Heenan, Glen-aray-Gore service; B. N. Smith, GoreConical Hills service.

J. B. Monk’s (Lumsden), application for a new passenger service licence was

adjourned sine die. The decision of the authority was reserved about the application of Wylie’s Garage. Ltd., (Tapanui), for an amendment to its goods service licence for an extra vehicle authority. Mr Raines reserved his decision in the review of goods service licences held by F. G. Walker (Mossbum) and J. C. Rendall (Balfour). E. W. Frame was granted the transfer of a passenger service licence from J. F. .Churstain for the Heriot-Gore service and the renewal of the licence was granted.
