Southland Croquet Championships
OFFICIAL OPENING BY MAYOR
Southland’s croquet titles are now at stake on the Northend Club’s green, and if the standard of play seen yesterday is any indication of the week’s play, the present champions will be hard pressed to retain their titles. The contest was officially opened yesterday morning by the Mayor (Mr J. R. Hanan), and play was immediately begun in the first rounds of the handicap singles and doubles. The championships will continue for some days. Several more rounds will be played on the Northern green today. The results of yesterday’s play were;
CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES—C GRADE First Round Mrs Anderson beat Mrs H. Albertson, 26-21. Mrs Pearce beat Mrs Middleton, 26-13. CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLES First Round Mesdames Robertson and Keen beat Mesdames Telfer and Gillanders, 26-12. HANDICAP SINGLES—A GRADE First Round Mrs Keen beat Mrs Robertson, 26-10, Mrs Morrison beat Mrs Edwards, 2623. ' Mrs H. Albertson beat Mrs Middleton, 26-5. Mrs Tennet beat Mrs Anderson, 2622. HANDICAP SINGLES—B GRADE First Round Miss Munro beat Mrs Shiels, 26-14. Mrs Stockdale beat Mrs Lawless, 2616. Mrs M. Murray beat Mrs Murray, 2624. Mrs Harris beat Mrs Martin, 26-16. Mrs Buchanan beat Mrs Robinson. 26-13. HANDICAP SINGLES—C GRADE First Round Mrs Sennet beat Mrs, J. Anderson, 26-22. Mrs E. Al’certson beat Mrs A. McKenzie, 26-23. HANDICAP DOUBLES—A GRADE First Round Mesdames Holmes and Stevens beat Mesdames Keen and Robertson, 26-18. Final Mesdames Holmes and Stevens beat Mesdames Parfitt and Strang, 26-12. HANDICAP DOUBLES—B GRADE First Round Mesdames Lawless and Shiels beat Mesdames H. Albertson and Tennet, 26-13. Mesdames Harris and Stockdale beat Mesdames Buchanan and Martin, 2618. Mesdames Robinson and Murray beat Mesdames Johnston and M. Murray. 26-19. DRAW FOR TODAY The draw for today is:— Northend lawns.—Mesdames Lawless and Shiels v.
