SAILING RAGES AT FORTROSE

Inter-Club Cup Won By Foam INVERCARGILL BOAT SECOND Three open handicap sailing races, one for the Southland Provincial Yacht and Motor-boat Association’s inter-' club challenge cup, comprised the programme for the Fortrose Boating Clubs annual regatta on Saturday. The races were contested by four Fortrose boats, the Nancy, the Ripple, the Foam, the Omit, and one Invercargill boat, the Irene. The forward work of the Ripple was ably done by a girl, Miss Joan Anderson. Miss Anderson took a full share of the work and did it with the confidence of an accomplished hand. The most successful boat of the day was the Nancy, a Fortrose boat sailed by F. Stirling and L. Chisholm. This boat won a first, a second, and a third award. Close to the Nancy , for sailing honours was the Foam, with one first and two third awards. The Foam was sailed by J. Speden and L. Lobb. The Invercargill boat, the Irene, was off scratch in all three races and had to make up some long handicaps. She was second for the inter-club cup. The course was a windward and leeward one of one mile and ; a-half and triangular in shape. A fresh breeze blew all the afternoon and conditions were ideal for sailing. ’ Several canoe races were held during the day and provided much amusement. Results were:—

FIRST RACE, open handicap. Three miles. First £l, second 15/-, third 10/-. OMIT (C. T. Ruddenklau, J. Ruddenklau, T. Ruddenklau, G. Ruddenklau), B£min. Sailing time, 35.40 1 NANCY (F. Stirling, L. Chisholm), 6Jmin. Sailing time, 34.55 2 FOAM (J. Speden, L. Lobb), Sailing time, 32.15 . 3 Also started: Ripple (IJmin), Irene (scr). The Omit was on a long handicap, but she lost a minute at the start by going too far over the mark and having to go back. It was not long before she was back in the race and making up her leeway on the Nancy. On. the beat to windward she overtook the Nancy and from then on was not seriously challenged. The Foam sailed steadily a few seconds behind the rest. The Irene lost whatever chance she might have had when at the start her centre-board fouled the bottom. This cost her fully three minutes. The Omit won by about one minute and a-quar-ter. The Nancy was 45 seconds further back.

SOUTHLAND PROVINCIAL YACHT AND MOTOR-BOAT ASSOCIATION’S INTER-CLUB CHALLENGE CUP. Four miles and a-half. First £2, second £l, third 12/6, fourth 7/6.

FOAM (J. Speden, L. Lobb), lmin. Sailing time, 42.37 1 IRENE (E. Jackson, V. Jackson, R. Fraser) scr. Sailing time, 42.43 2 NANCY (F. Stirling, L. Chisholm), Simin. Sailing time, 49.10 3 Also started: Omit (smin), Ripple (lmin). The Omit was first to the westward mark, followed by the Nancy, the Foam, the Ripple and the Irene. The Foam and the Ripple collided at the start and began again. They continued in this order on the leeward tack, with the Nancy reducing the Omit’s lead. On the beat to windward in the next round the Nancy had overtaken the Omit and was leading from the Foam and the Irene. The Ripple withdrew at this stage. The Nancy, followed by the Foam and the Irene, led for the whole of the second round, but on the westward beat she was overtaken by the Foam and the Irene. They continued in that order till the finish. The collision at the start between the Foam and the Ripple is to be discussed at a future meeting of the club. THIRD RACE, open handicap. First £llO/-; second £1; third 10/-. Three miles. NANCY (F. Stirling, J. Chisholm), 4Jmin. Sailing time: 29.43 1 RIPPLE (D. Anderson, Miss J. Anderson, S. Bennison) lmin. Sailing time 28.15 2

FOAM (J. Speden, L. Lobb) Jmin.

Sailing time: 27.55 3 IRENE (E. Jackson, V. Jackson, R. Fraser), scr. Sailing time: 28.20 4

Also started: Omit (4Jmin). The Nancy and the Omit sailed together to the westward mark, neither gaining any appreciable advantage. When they were half-way out to the first mark the Ripple started, followed a few seconds later by the Foam and then the Irene. When the Ripple was half-way out to the mark the Omit was nearing the buoy, but she missed it and had to go back. This cost her several seconds. When the Ripple rounded the buoy the Omit was only 100 yards ahead. The Foam and the Irene rounded several seconds later. None had gained anything on the leader. The Nancy, sailing well, was first round the windward buoy, and was followed 20 seconds later by the Omit. The Ripple rounded about 40sec later and made several s'econds on the Omit by a smart turn. The Foam and the Irene rounded about half a minute later. The Nancy was wide of the mark and sailed back, losing several seconds. The Ripple beat the Omit to the buoy and was followed closely by the Foam. Then came the Irene and the Omit well back. The Nancy was still holding her lead and coming on the windward tack looked a certain winner. The Ripple and the Foam raced to the windward buoy with only a few lengths between them. Then came the Irene, with the Omit well back. The Nancy, won by 150 yards from; the Ripple,: with the Foam 30 yards further hack. The Irene, in fourth place, had made up about half her handicap. The Omit was well back in fifth place.
