ROADS IN SOUTHLAND COUNTY

ADDRESS TO ENGINEERS At a meeting of the Southland branch of the New Zealand Institute of Engineers the main business was the consideration of a paper written by Mr G. R. Milward on “Gravelled Roads in the Southland County.” Mr Milward discussed the development of the Southland county in its reading system, the natural gravel or metal deposits with which the county was endowed and the methods employed by the council in constructing gravelled roads and maintaining them. A further portion of the paper was devoted to a description of the gravel crushing and screening plant in producing maintenance gravel and gravel suitable for bituminous work. The costs of the various plant operations were also discussed and the methods used in delivering the required material to the roads. A further section was devoted to graders and their operation,. and also the engineering administration of the council.

Mr Milward also introduced a short paper on the “Corrugations of Gravelled Roads.” This caused a discussion and the theories of the cause of corrugations were fully investigated. Mr J. G. C. Baker was chairman and presided over a full attendance of members.
