MEMORIAL FUND APPEAL
Archbishop Julius ... ■- ■- ■ ’ PROJECT COMMENDED BY MR SAVAGE The Archbishop Julius memorial fund, with which extensions will be made to the Christchurch Cathedral, has now reached £3789 13/-. It is planned to extend the appeal to centres outside Canterbury. Not only are there many Canterbury people now in other parts of New Zealand, but the Archbishop as Primate of New Zealand was known and honoured throughout the Dominion. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, has written to the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr R. M. jMacfarlane) paying a tribute to the memory of the Archbishop and giving his support to the memorial appeal, commending it to the people of the Dominion. The Industries and Commerce, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, in a letter to the Rev. W. E. D. Davies, organizer of the appeal, has also commended the memorial project to the people. “DOMINION HIS DIOCESE” The Prime Minister’s letter reads as follows:— “It is a privilege to be associated with the public appeal to commemorate the life and achievements of Archbishop Julius. He was in the truest sense of the term a very great man, who did signal service in furthering the interests of this country. His work was by no means confined to his own district or to his own church. “In many respects the Dominion was his diocese and the influence of his broad-mindedness, sympathy and common- sense was deeply appreciated among all classes of the people. It is fitting that the proposed memorial should take the form of an extension of the Cathedral in which he himself was a magnetic influence, and it should. be noted that his own wishes were that adequate accommodation might be provided within the Cathedral for those taking part in services on national and civic and special occasions. “These, indeed, were part of his effective work and influence on the thought of the community. The memory of Archbishop Julius’s services for the church and the people will not soon be forgotten and it is fitting that future generations with no direct knowledge of his great personality should have some permanent reminder of a man who served his own generation with all his heart and energetic ability. I earnestly commend this appeal to the people of the Dominion.” MR SULLIVAN’S PRAISE Mr Sullivan’s letter reads:— “I was most interested to learn of the proposal to erect a memorial as a testimony to the life and work of the late Archbishop Julius. I think the idea an excellent one, and I am pleased to note the support which is being given to this movement. “The late Archbishop Julius was a gentleman for whom I had the greatest respect and regard, and I know full well the splendid and valuable work which he carried out throughout Canterbury. It is eminently fitting that his work should be commemorated by an appropriate memorial, and I can think of no more fitting monument than the improvements and additions which it is proposed to make- in the Cathedral in which he laboured. “I feel certain that the citizens of Christchurch and the people of Canterbury generally will generously support this worthy appeal and thus make possible the completion of the memorial to a great man who has rendered magnificent service to the whole Dominion.” Subscriptions should be sent to the Rev. W. E D. Davies, care the Mayor, Council Chambers, Christchurch.
