The Tasman pacer Van Derby (closely related to Lawn Derby) was responsible for a spectacular performance at Epsom last Saturday. He lost so much ground at the start that he was soon nearly 200 yards behind the leaders, and then finished second, travelling his last mile in 2min ssec. He made amends by winning on the second day, and if he can be taught to begin correctly he will win plenty of races. Van Derby is trained by F. J. Smith, but is still owned by Mr E. Tatlow, of Tasmania.
