FOUR CHARGES FACED BY TRAVELLER

SEQUEL TO ACCIDENT

(United Press Association)

AUCKLAND, October 27. Arising from an accident on the Parnell road on the evening of September 17, John Irvine Crawford, aged 26, a traveller, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court before Justices of the Peace to answer four charges, namely, to being intoxicated in charge of a car, causing bodily harm to Mrs Phyllis Stevenson, failing to stop and ascertain if anyone was injured and negligently driving, thereby causing bodily injury. The intoxication charge was adjourned sine die.

The evidence showed that Mrs Stevenson was three weeks in the Auckland Hospital with a cut eye, a fracture of the forearm and bruises. The car was travelling at about 25 miles an hour. A woman pedestrian was thrown to the roadway. The car continued on and later returned to the scene of the accident and Crawford told a constable that he thought he had struck something. Crawford pleaded not guilty to the three charges and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was renewed.
