Mr J. J. W. Pollard, director of the South Islands Travel Association, arrived in Invercargill from Christchurch last evening. He will return north tomorrow.

Mr F. H. Pearce, electrical engineer at Bluff, leaves by this morning’s express to attend the conference of electrical engineers at Wellington. Mr Clive McPherson, of Melbourne, was yesterday appointed to the board of directors of the National Bank of Australasia Limited in succession to the late Sir Ernest Wreford, according to a cable message received by the New Zealand agents, the National Bank of New Zealand Limited. Mr McPherson is managing director of Young-Husband Limited and a Commonwealth representative on the British Phosphate Commission.—Press Association. ■

Captain H. Shugg, of Melbourne, has been appointed chief adjudicator for the New Zealand brass bands contest to be held in Christchurch from February 19 to February 25, 1939. This advice has been received by the Christchurch Citizens’ Band Committee from the secretary of the New Zealand Brass Bands Association. —Press Association.

A motion of appreciation of the services of Mr W. A. Roxburgh, who for many years represented the Northern District on the directorate of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association, was carried at the annual meeting of the association yesterday. Mr Roxburgh, who has left the district, was succeeded on the directorate by Mr W. L. Cunningham, of Castle Downs.

Mr William H. Hall, of Dunedin, technical assistant to Dr A. M. Begg, director of the New Zealand branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign, has reached London in advance of Dr Begg. Together they will use their year’s leave of absence for further researches into the cancer problem. Mr C. A. R. Brunt, of the Palmerston North staff of the National Bank of New Zealand, has been appointed general secretary of the New Zealand Bank Officers’ Guild, in succession to Mr H. P. Mourant. Mr Brunt holds the diploma in banking and has had experience in the London office of the National Bank.
