POST IN SOFIA FOR RHODES SCHOLAR

MR N. DAVIS APPOINTED TO UNIVERSITY

DUNEDIN, September 9.

Mr Norman Davis, M.A. (N.Z.), B.A. (Oxon), an Otago Rhodes scholar, who has been lecturer in English in the university at Kaunas, Lithuania, during the past year has received an appointment in the State University at Sofia. The post is a new one arranged by the British Council, a subsidiary of the Publicity Section of the Foreign Office. In addition to university work, the position involves general supervision of the teaching of English all over Bulgaria and an endeavour to increase British influence in the Balkans. The appointment is in the first instance for three years and Mr Davis is at present in the office of the council in London, where he is to have a brief course of preparation for the work which he is to undertake towards the end of September. Mr Davis, who is a son of Mr J. J. Davis, of Dunedin, received his early education at the High Street school and was joint dux in 1929 of the Otago Boys’ High School. In the same year he was awarded a university national scholarship and in 1932 he completed his B.A. degree at the University of Otago, gaining first-class honours in English. Mr Davis gained a Rhodes Scholarship in 1934.
