KENNINGTON

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION The celebration of the fifth birthday of the Kennington Women’s Institute was held in the hall. Representatives were present from the Rimu branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union and from the institutes at Longbush, Woodend and Waianiwa. Music for the dances was played by Mrs Leith (Woodend), Mrs Mills, Miss I. Henderson and Messrs B. Dawson and R. McLean. Miss I. Henderson was accompanist and Mr J. Alexander master of ceremonies. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Mrs Cecil Henderson and the Lucky Cup was held by Miss Evans, of Longbush. Miss F. Sampson was the winner of the guessing competition. Those contributing items included Misses Gray and Swale (vocal solos), Marjorie Dawson, May Henderson and Mr G. Waddell (tap dances), Miss Phyllis Cloughley (sword dance) and Messrs J. Collins (recitation) and Mountney (mouth-organ solo). The birthday cake, which had been iced by Mrs James Crombie, was piped in by Mr R. McLean, and two little girls, Misses Shelagh Collins and Mae Henderson, wheeled it in. Mrs J.' Henderson, the president, welcomed visitors from Kennington and delegates from other branches and called on Mrs Hunter of the Waianiwa Women’s Institute to light the candles and Mrs Leith to extinguish them. A slice of cake was cut by the representative of each institute and the representatives gave greetings to the' Kennington branch. MISSIONARY UNION The monthly meeting of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union was held in the Kennington church,. Mrs J. H. Thomson presiding over a fair attendance of members. Letters and extracts were read by the following: Mrs W. Peters, Miss Calvert, Miss Thomson and Mrs J. H. Thomson. Hostesses for afternoon tea were Mrs W. Anderson and Miss Graham.
