MATAURA

PLOUGHING MATCH ASSOCIATION GOOD ATTENDANCE AT ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Mataura Ploughing Match Association was well attended. Mr J. Glover was chairman. The annual report stated:— “Although marred by the most unfavourable weather, the annual fixture last year was largely attended by the public, which speaks highly of the popularity of the match, and had it not been for that interest there would have been a greater financial loss on the year’s working. Entries in most of the events were fair and the quality of the work done was commented upon very favourably by the judges, especially in the high cut for A grade ploughmen. There was a big entry in the novice section. “In order to keep the programme up to the requirements of the times a committee was set up last year to revise the schedule and suggest possible improvements. The balance-sheet shows that there was a loss of £2 16/8 during last year, but the association still has a handsome credit balance of £44 11/8.” The election of officers resulted:— President, Mr R. Pryde; vice-presidents, Messrs J. Forbes, W. A. Christie, T. Richmond, R. Gray and J. Glover; secretary, Mr A. Gourley (re-elected); auditor, Mr C. H. Hargest; committee, Messrs R. F. Dickie, J. J. Christie, W. Muir, C. Hinksman, V. Dickie, R. Heaps, W. Macdonald, J. R. Brewster, J. Henderson, W. Y. Dickie, R. Bagrie, T. Hardy and W. A. Dickie. Discussing the alterations recommended in the schedule Mr A. Christie explained that in class C last year the specification of coulter cut necessitated some outlay by competitors, as mostly plain coulters were used. He said that in the other classes the coulter cut was specified. It was decided to agree to the alteration. A suggestion by Mr W. Y. Dickie that the age limit for the novice class be 20 years was not approved, as it was considered that it might affect entries. It was decided that in class D the furrow be not less than 14 inches wide and not more than 8 inches deep. Special awards added to the . schedule were as follows:—Prizes for best four horse team, youngest and oldest ploughmen and best ins and outs in each class. Mr Dickie suggested where a competitor won with a borrowed team the name of the owner of the team, as well as the winner, should be shown. A committee consisting of Messrs J. Glover, W. A. Christie and W. Macdonald was set up to make arrangements for the match on June 25. Judges for the various events were appointed as follows:— ' Ploughing.—Mr W. James. Best ins and outs.—Messrs J. Forbes and R. Gray. Horses and harness.—Mr R. Kennedy, Drummond. RIFLE SHOOTING The Mataura Defence Rifle Club fired the final match of the season.
