EDENDALE

HALF-HOLIDAY IN TOWN PUBLIC MEETING FAVOURS SATURDAY The chairman reported at a meeting of the Edendale Town Board that at a recent public meeting it had been decided that in future Saturday, and not Wednesday, would be the statutory half-holiday in Edendale, and a motion to that effect had been passed.. There were present:—-Commissioners W. Irvine (chairman), Thomas Hickey, M. D. Turner, G. P. Dempster and W. W. Chaplin. In his monthly report to the board, the inspector, Mr J. Blah 1 , said he had carried out extensive improvements to the rubbish tip and had cleaned out the gutters in the township area. Several complaints about wandering stock and cyclists riding on footpaths had been made to him, and he was keeping a strict look-out for offenders. He considered that a few more steel crossings were necessary in several parts of the town to replace wooden ones which had outlived their usefulness.

Reporting on the arrears of rates, the clerk stated that several payments had been received in the last month, and more had been promised. At the meeting of the board in January, Commissioner W. W. Chaplin was authorized to make inquiries about the price of half-a-dozen new chairs for the Town Hall. He reported having secured prices from several firms, and had placed ah order. The action of Commissioner Chaplin was confirmed. The clerk said that two tenders had been received for the work of painting and repairing the public hall. The tender of G. G. Stephen of £l6 15/- was accepted. The chairman reported that he had been interviewed by the district fields inspector (Mr G. T. McNally, Wyndham), about the prevalence of rabbits on the recreation reserve. The clerk said that the person who had been granted the trapping rights some time ago had relinquished them and passed them on to another party. So far, however, no application had been made to the Town Board. Cr Hickey stated that he had been approached by the man concerned, and the latter had stated his intention of trapping the area. He had told him that as long as he did the job thoroughly he would be granted the trapping rights. The action of Cr Hickey was confirmed. The erection of the new gates at the entrance to the recreation reserve was discussed, tenders having been called for the work after the meeting in Jan-’ uary. It was decided to accept the tender of G. G. Stephen, of £44. for the work.
